Humanitas University is a private medical university located in Milan, in Italy. The university which established in 2014, offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs in medicine, dentistry and nursing. International students who want to receive a high-quality medical education in Italy choose Humanitas University even if it might be viewed as an emerging institution in terms of its founding date. Humanitas University is quickly becoming a top choice of students interested in studying medicine and pursuing a career in healthcare with a focus on an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare and practical experience through clinical rotations.
Humanitas University is an Italian medical school that has indeed uphold the dignity of Italian medical education for over a decade. There is little doubt that this prestigious institution is a major player in Italian medical education. Humanitas kick-started its first academic calender when it has been separated from the University of Milan as an independent medical school. Since then, this Italian medical school has comfortably been training over 1,200 on a yearly basis across several medical programs such as medicine, physiotherapy, nursing and more.
The medicine and surgery program at the University Of Humanitas lasts for 6 years and this program is English-taught, making it a good option for non-Italian speaking students. However, basic knowledge of the Italian language is needed during the third year where students undergo clinical training in which they will have to communicate with patients at the teaching hospital. To meet up with this, the University Of Humanitas provides additional language classes for international students.
The University of Humanitas degree being highly recognized by the UK General Medical Council (GMC) makes the school highly ranked across Europe and the students are considered exceptional.
Key Benefits Of Studying Medicine At The University Of Humanitas
Humanitas University is providing students with the best possible learning experience. That’s why the university integrated three major teaching methods throughout the teaching program: interdisciplinary modules, simulation activities and on-the-job teaching experience. These interdisciplinary modules help students gain a deeper understanding of complex topics by learning from experts across multiple fields. Simulation activities provide hands-on experience, allowing students to develop practical skills in a safe and controlled environment. Additionally, on-the-job teaching experience gives students the opportunity to work alongside highly experienced scientists and clinicians, gaining valuable insights into the industry.
Teaching program takes place at the state-of-the-art Humanitas Research Hospital. With over 75,000 square meters of space, students have access to world-class teaching facilities and resources. The faculty includes Nobel Prize winners and leading experts in their fields, ensuring that their students receive the highest quality education possible.
Another important advantage of University of Humanitas is its close relationship with the IRCCS Istituto Clinico Humanitas hospital, which was ranked in the first place in Italy by Newsweek’s list of the best smart hospitals in the world for 2023. Vocational activities are given the top priority; starting in the third year, students start putting the theory they have learned in class into practice by learning how to take a case history, examine a patient, and participate in discussions of clinical cases while being supervised by a tutor. The Mario Luzzatto Simulation Centre, one of the biggest simulation centers in Europe with over 2,000 square meters of operating rooms, multimedia control rooms and surgeries, is also located at Humanitas University. Here, students can practice in complete safety and advance their professional training.
Young physicians are required to be prepared here for the work because an Italian medical degree enables holders to start practicing right away. Due to this, students are expected to complete three months of practice between their fifth and sixth years of education: one month in general medicine, one month in surgery and the last month in another medical discipline.
Unlike other medical schools, the University of Humanitas does train students to be professional that is fully aware of cultural issues as regards healing and illnesses. With this already clearly stated, the curriculum comprises of elective and core courses, dissertation training and clinical. In addition to that, students are also encouraged to go for seminars and conferences. Each student may function incredibly well in the outside world thanks to this well-designed program.
The Virgilio Program is open to third-year students who are interested in biomedical research, with the goal of developing knowledge and understanding about the relationship between basic and clinical research as well as acquiring the skills to combine patient care with research. They will also get the opportunity to conduct research for an experimental thesis at one of the partner universities. The Honors Track is another option for students who want to gain additional knowledge, abilities and competencies in a particular clinical field. This program is demanding for fourth-year students and includes lectures, seminars and practical exercises at the simulation center and anatomy lab of the university. Five macro-areas are available in the yearly call for applications: surgery, oncology, orthopedics, allergology and emergency medicine. Finally, Hunimed prepares students for the USMLE by offering a curriculum in line with the necessary educational requirements in cooperation with the US National Board of Medical Examiners. This is for students who are interested in practicing medicine in the US.
Admission to the degree program in medicine and surgery is determined by performance on the HUMAT admission examinations, which are also available to seniors and juniors in high school. Students have 120 minutes to complete 60 multiple-choice questions with four response options on the HUMAT Test. Scientific thinking and Academic literacy/Critical Thinking are the two parts that make up the exam.
It is only possible to take the admission test in English. The exam now consists of two potential rounds of ONLINE (home-based) exams rather to only one round of HUMAT examinations. Each examination round is divided into many sessions with papers of varying degrees of difficulty. Each applicant may attend a maximum of two of the February and March sessions. Around 90 points were required to pass the HUMAT exam for the educational year 2022–2023. Since there were 2000 candidates for the EU and 500 for the NON-EU, there is roughly one open slot for every ten applicants.
About The University Of Humanitas Medical School
The University Of Humanitas offers two separate medical degrees. The first medical degree is been referred to as Hunimed, which is also called the mainstream medical degree. This particular program majors in clinical teachings and less of others. The second medical degree is known as MEDTEC degree which prioritizes more in the combination of biotechnology in medicine, how they influence humans and how they can be used.
Hunimed Medical Degree – This is a medical degree program offered at the Humanitas Research Hospital. It is a 6 years program that deals with the study of human Science, clinical disciplines, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Surgery. This first two years of this program is dedicated to learning the basics of human science, while the remaining four years are used to study the other parts of Hunimed Medical Degree.
At the third year of this program, Clerkships begins and students are integrated into daily hospital routines, which in turn provides them with all the training needed to become good physicians. In addition, Hunimed medical program provides the opportunity for medical students to partake in Virgilio Program which involves going for seminars and getting involved with laboratory activities. This program can also be used to earn extra credit units.
MEDTEC Medical Degree – This degree is another innovative idea from the Humanitas University. It was derived from the combination of both The Politecnico di Milano and the Humanitas University. It’s a program that deals with understanding more about biotechnology and Medicals. The primary goal of this medical degree is to provide the biotechnological skills which will be needed by the medical practitioners in the nearest future.
With this medical program, students will be able to gain more experience and knowledge in areas that pertain to medicine, such as robotic surgery, A.I. and machine learning, big data analysis, precision medicine, bioprostheses, 3D printing and many more. Apart from the medical certification, MEDTECmedical degree offers an additional degree, Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. This additional degree is issued by Politecnico di Milano due to the additional knowledge gained in that field.
